Are you looking for something fun to do with the family during a fall weekend?
From enjoying Mother Nature’s simple pleasures (apple picking) to planning a perfect fall trip with friends (football game, anyone?), here are our favorite fall activities for kids, families and friends.
APPLE PICKING
Who doesn’t like to pick their own fruit? Lace up your boots and wear your favorite sweater and then head over to one of the many apple orchards near Chicago.
GET LOST IN A CORN MAZE
Did you take a wrong turn? Have you seen that corn husk before? How many hours have you been in this maze? Grab your compass and head out to a crazy corn maze with your family and friends.
VISIT A PUMPKIN PATCH
Pumpkins are ripe for the picking in late September and into October, with locations all across the Chicagoland area. Check out one of these pumpkin patches this fall.
GO CAMPING (IN THE BACKYARD)
If you never been camping before, camping in the backyard is a great way to ease into real camping. It is a great way to get outside and enjoy the nighttime nature without the hassle of packing up everyone and everything. If you want to see how your kids will handle it or just want to spend an evening under the stars (with all the amenities of home nearby) backyard camping is perfect for you.
VISIT A PETTING ZOO
Give your kids the opportunity to get up close and personal with their new animal friends; feed a giraffe, goat, llama or cow. At these petting zoos you will find educational programs, attractions and experiences that will help make most out of your family’s visit.
MAKE A SCARECROW
Scarecrows are great for frightening unwanted critters from your garden or adding some festive décor to your yard for fall. A simple scarecrow is easy to build; click here for step-by-step directions.
WRITE WHAT YOU ARE THANKFUL FOR
Sometimes it can be difficult to realize what you are thankful and grateful for. When the world seems full of challenges and hurdles, you might need a little inspiration on the things that you can be grateful for. Take a few minutes and write down what you are thankful for and then share with your family.
MAKE S’MORES
Who doesn’t love marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers? You don’t even have to make a bonfire; cook your marshmallows over the stove.
BOB FOR APPLES
Bobbing for apples is a traditional autumn game that people of all ages enjoy. All you need is a large tub of water, enough apples to cover the surface and a group of people willing to get their faces soaking wet. You can also hang apples from string and try to catch an apple with your teeth as they swing and sway.
GO TO A FOOTBALL GAME
If you are a die-hard American football fan, nothing beats watching a football game live. You get caught up in the excitement of cheering for your team. You don’t even have to go to a professional game; high school and college football games are just as fun. So head out in your team gear and cheer on your favorite team this season.
THROW A HALLOWEEN PARTY
Gather your family and friends to have a party. Make spiders to eat, have a costume contest, and play a scary movie in the background.
BAKE AN APPLE OR PUMPKIN PIE
Fall is the time to make pies whether it is an apple or pumpkin pie. Have the kids help make the pies for an afternoon activity.
GO TO A HAUNTED HOUSE
There is something strangely comforting about the controlled yet frightening environments of haunted houses. Pack up the kids or get a group of your friends and head out to a haunted house near Schaumburg.
