Driver and Pedestrian Safety

As spring approaches and more people are out and about, we would like to remind you that both drivers and pedestrians are responsible for traffic safety.

Safety is a two-way street and sometimes pedestrians are not where they should be or where a driver expects them to be.

Drivers and pedestrians should follow these safety practices:

Drivers:

  • Be Alert: Remain vigilant and always keep an eye out for pedestrians, especially during the night or in bad weather conditions. Avoid distractions.
  • Be Predictable: Always stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk or at an intersection. Slow down and prepare to stop when passing a crosswalk. Never pass another vehicle stopped in a crosswalk. There may be people crossing that you can’t see.

Pedestrians:

  • Be Visible: Wear bright/reflective clothing and attempt to make eye contact with drivers whenever possible. Never assume a driver sees you.
  • Be Alert: Your eyes and ears are your best tools for keeping yourself safe. Avoid distractions.
  • Be Predictable: Use crosswalks and sidewalks. If a crosswalk is not available, be sure to find a well-lit spot on the road and only cross when it is safe to do so.

Both drivers and pedestrians should follow the rules of the road and obey all traffic signs and signals. By taking basic precautions and being aware of your surroundings, you can help reduce the likelihood of an unnecessary collision. Even if you have the right-of-way, please practice patience with others on the roadways.
