January is a time for a new beginning and setting personal goals. The National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) has named January “Get Organized & Be Productive (GO) Month”.
Getting organize can seem like a daunting and overwhelming task for many of us. The list of things to be organized seems so reasonable at the beginning but can quickly become longer and more overwhelming.
We came up with some ways to prevent feeling overwhelmed in the organization process.
Tip One: Tackle Clutter. Clutter around the house only adds to your stress. Your home should be a place you can relax, feel comfortable and enjoy spending time in. Set aside some time to organize and declutter.
Tip Two: Utilize all your wall space. Often, we are looking for storage space but can’t seem to find somewhere to place a bookcase or storage container. Try finding a stand-alone cabinet or cubes to display photos or other knick-knacks.
Tip Three: Start in one place. If you have several areas in your home you want to get under control, start with just one. Which one to start with – determine if it is the area that gives you the biggest headache, or is it the area that guests see easily when they visit? Whatever your priority is, select one area and stick to it. Many attempts at organization fail when the task of cleaning the entire house seems daunting and people give up. When you finish one area, celebrate and move on to the next.
Tip Four: Get creative. If you are looking for extra storage space, think outside of the box. Think about taking a wall mounted wire planter you might use outside for plants and bring it inside for fruit storage in the kitchen, magazines, your hair dryer or even stuffed animals in the kid’s room. It’s a great idea and allows you to use some of your walls and frees up the floor space.
Tip Five: Over the door storage. Adding more storage space try using an over the door shoe organizer for other things. You can organize socks, hats, gloves and even toys.
What organization tips do you have? We’d love to hear them.
